SUSAN B. ANTHONY
SUSAN B. ANTHONY DOLLAR 1979-1981 AND 1999
The Susan B. Anthony dollar was a United States dollar coin minted from 1979 to 1981, when the series was suspended due to poor public acceptance (the size of the coin and the color caused it to be confused with the quarter and rejecting coins in the vending machines), and again in 1999.
Proposed as a smaller replacement for the cumbersome Eisenhower dollar, several proposals for the coin design were submitted, but social reformer Susan B. Anthony was selected as the design subject (her work led to the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, which ensures women the right to vote).
The reverse design of the Eisenhower dollar was kept. Both sides of the coin were designed by Frank Gasparro. A round planchet with an eleven-sided inner border was chosen for the smaller dollar.
It was the first circulating dollar coin to bear the "P" Mintfor Philadelphia mint mark and only the second denomination to bear the "P" Mint mark.
