The Buffalo nickel or Indian Head nickel is a
copper-nickel five-cent piece that was struck
by the United States Mint from 1913 to 1938.
It was designed by sculptor James Earle Fraser. Composition:75% copper and 25% nickel.
According to Fraser, the animal that appears on
the reverse is the American bison Black Diamond he saw at Bronx Zoo.
The identity of the Indians whom Fraser used as models is somewhat uncertain, as Fraser told various and not always consistent stories during the forty years he lived after designing the nickel.

In 1913 the change came into design when the
reverse design was slightly altered to solve
problems that had resulted in fewer strikes per
die pair than expected.
These changes enlarged the legend "FIVE CENTS" and changed the ground on which the bison stands from a hill to flat ground. The changes to what are known as Type II nickels (with the originals Type I) actually decreased the die life. Its beautiful design makes this nickel one of the most desirable and collectible coin in America.
